Meet Amani, Assistant Product Development Intern

Hi Amani! Tell us about your role at Joanie - what does a typical day look like? 

Hey! I’m the new Assistant Product Development Intern that’s just joined the team for my placement at university, 2 months in! Where is the time going?!  

I assist our amazing Garment Technologist/Production Manager with everything related to the production of garments, ensuring that they arrive to you Joanie Gals as perfect as ever! My role consists of A-LOT of measuring, fittings, more measuring, assisting, and working to solve production queries.   

What’s the best bit about your job? 

I’ve always valued the process and behind-the-scenes when it comes to garment production. Witnessing our pieces from the early proto stage, amending and perfecting them to their final form, is always an incredible feeling. You go on a journey with each style, and you get to celebrate their launch with a team who are so passionate about the brand. 

Can you describe yourself in three words? 

Dedicated, disciplined, determined .

How would you define your personal style? 

Everything oversized. I’m usually in my favourite oversized blazer that I thrifted, and even at university, everyone knows that an oversized heavily padded suit jacket is a bit of Amani!  Saying that, I’m still exploring my style by embracing prints, more colour, and different silhouettes. I don’t believe there should be rules in fashion - you want to wear clashing prints?! Go for it! It’s all about the confidence. 

I enjoy looking like a rainbow one day, drowning in clothes the next with oversized fits, then toning it down with my growing shirt collection. I honestly wake up, usually check the weather to make sure I’m wearing suitable footwear (most likely Docs), then form my outfit from there. It all depends on what mood I’m in, like this week for example: I wore a green and white gingham sundress on Monday, styled with an oversized hot pink shirt, tied around the waist. And today? I’m in distressed patchwork jeans, with a vintage pinstripe shirt.  

In a nutshell, I’m just having fun!

When this arrived in the office, I fell in love with the print immediately. Just like Sierra, it’s another versatile product that you can style in various ways. But the winner for me is it being a midaxi dress. Midaxi is my favourite length in both skirts and dresses, as you can throw on both heels and boots. Another design feature that I love, which this style has of course, is pleats at the bust and waistband. Pleats in general are very elegant, complex in their construction, but stunning when executed. And Albertine has it all.

As my favourite colour is green, this was a no-brainer. But can we talk about how those hot pink buttons elevate this completely? Green and pink is one of my favourite colour combinations to wear as they complement each other so well. And this cardigan has both! It’s oversized for a cosier feel, whilst exploding with colour, elements you need in a garment – comfort and colour.

This is one of the cutest tops ever! I wear a lot of skirts and wide-leg jeans, and this fits perfectly with both. Everyone has space for a classic polka dot print in their wardrobe. The wrap front just gives it that extra zhuzh for a more fitted, feminine feel. You can wear this for a glam look, or something casual.

It’s the stripe print that caught my eyes! We already know I love suits (the power dressing era is my fave), so when I saw this, I thought o-m-g. From the stunning stripe print, the wide legs, and the detailing of the zip on the front, I just know I will wear this A-LOT. If you’re feeling bold and brave, and want that extra pop, layer it with our Selina’s (we have some stunning new prints in Selina coming soon, so keep an eye out…).

If I could sum up this style in one word, it would be versatile. Not because it’s a safe colour, but how many outfits you can rock in this all year round. It’s perfect for summer because of how breathable and lightweight the fabric is, but you can also style it in various ways for the rest of the seasons. Pair it with a cardigan, shirt (buttoned/unbuttoned/tied at the waist), cropped jacket, and you’ve got a whole new vibe! Don’t be afraid to layer with this dress, think about the numerous outfits you can pull off if you do!
