Happy International Women’s Day, Joanie Gals! To celebrate, we’re reflecting on this year’s theme by highlighting some of the many ways we work to ‘inspire inclusion’ and forge women’s equality at Joanie HQ.
What Is International Women’s Day?
International Women’s Day (IWD) is a global holiday celebrated on the 8th of March every year, dedicated to promoting the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women, while marking a call to action to accelerate women’s equality.
The first IWD was honoured on the 19th of March 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland, with more than one million men and women attending rallies to campaign for women's rights to work, vote, be trained, to hold public office and end discrimination.
In 1975, International Women’s Day was marked by the United Nations for the first time, and the day is now an official public holiday in many countries around the world.
This year’s theme is 'inspire inclusion' - the idea that we can collectively forge a better, more inclusive world by inspiring others to understand and value women’s inclusion.
Inspiring Inclusion at Joanie
