What is Smart Works Greater Manchester ?

Smart Works Greater Manchester is a charity that works with women to provide coaching and dressing services to help them feel their most confident at job interviews and when they start work. They have centres located all over the UK, and in the eight years they’ve been up and running, they have helped over 20,000 women into employment.

The women who come to Smart Works Greater Manchester are referred from Job Centres, mental health charities, women’s refuges, homeless shelters, the prison service, care services, and youth organisations.

Smart Works Greater Manchester believe in the power of clothes and coaching to transform a woman’s confidence, and their team is passionate about empowering women. They work tirelessly to ensure that each of their clients receives the support that they need to overcome the barriers that can often result in a cycle of failed interviews and unemployment.

The women that Smart Works support are often at an increased risk of economic hardship and discrimination: in the last year, 43% of their clients had been unemployed for over a year, 25% had been rejected from over 50 jobs, and 14% had been rejected from over 100 jobs. In addition, 40% were single mothers, 13% have a disability, and 52% were from an ethnic minority.

After their appointment, 93% of Smart Works’ clients reported feeling more confident about succeeding in their next interview, 97% felt more confident in their new outfit, and 93% felt more aware of their strengths and skills.

How Do Smart Works Greater Manchester Help Their Clients?

Each client receives a bespoke dressing consultation with two trained volunteers who help them select a beautiful and high-quality interview outfit to fill them with confidence. This is free of charge, and the clothes are theirs to keep.

This is followed by a one-to-one coaching session with an expert interview coach, where each client receives valuable interview preparation, unlocking their potential and enabling them to succeed at their interview.

72% of Smart Works’ clients secure a job within a month of their initial consultation! Once their client gets the job, they are welcomed back for a Second Dressing, where they receive a capsule working wardrobe to last until their first pay cheque.
