‘Tis the season to be jolly, Joanie Gals and what better way to get into the festive spirit than with our must watch Christmas films! Get the Christmas lights twinkling, grab your candy canes and eggnog and get ready to settle in with our 10 classic Christmas Movies List!

It’s a Wonderful Life (1946)

There’s no better way to get those festive feels tingling than with classic Christmas films and It’s a Wonderful Life is perfect for the job. If you’re ready to join George Bailey on his emotional journey of seeing what the world would be like without him thanks to the help of a trainee angel trying to earn their wings, then Frank Capra is the man to lead the way. With a storyline that’s timeless, hopeful, funny and above all, life affirming, it’s no wonder families gather together every year to watch this film as their Christmas tradition. If you hear us cheering that an angel has just got its wings, you’ll know we’ve just watched this Christmas movie.

Scrooged (1988)

If you’re not quite ready to go fully festive with your first-to-watch Christmas films, then Scrooged is the one for you! You can join Bill Murray on a magical ride where the only way to get into the Christmas spirit is to be haunted into it. As you watch Francis Cross learn the true meaning of Christmas with the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future you’re bound to start getting those warm and fuzzy feelings along the way and be singing ‘Put a Little Love in Your Heart’ with Bill and the gang for the closing scenes.

Dr Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)

If you like your Christmas movies with a side of comedy, sass and exceptionally adorable costume design, then Dr Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas is what you need to be getting festive with. From the quick-witted one liners The Grinch delivers throughout the film, to the outlandish hair do’s we all know we’ll try out after a few too many eggnogs, what more could we want from a light-hearted Christmas movie?! Watching Cindy Lou Who reignite the Grinch’s love for Christmas is enough to make anyone’s heart grow three sizes!

Love Actually (2003)

We love nothing more than when December rolls around so we can finally have a justifiable reason to watch Love Actually (again). With a star-studded cast, not just one tale of love but eight, and a soundtrack that will have us recreating some of Hugh Grant’s classic dance moves, it’s hard to find a reason to not watch this Christmas film. Get set for an emotional rollercoaster of love, loss and airport chases that we’d all love to do ourselves one day with a film that will make you realise that all you need is love, actually.

Home Alone (1990)

If you’ve not yet put up your Christmas tree, then I would suggest watching the classic Christmas movie, Home Alone before you do. Not only does Kevin McCallister show us what it’s like to rule the roost as a kid and how to deal with overly persistent burglars in some pretty ingenious ways, but he also shows us some exceptional Christmas decorating skills that will provide the ultimate inspiration for this year’s décor! If you’ve got your decorating done already then fear not, for watching Kevin make The Wet Bandits rue the day they ever tried to break into his home at Christmas is enough to have us shouting “yes!” when Kevin asks, “do you guys give up or are you thirsty for more?”

Elf (2003)

If you’ve ever wanted to take a trip to The Big Apple at Christmas, then there’s only one guide that should take you, Buddy the Elf. This Christmas film really knocks the festive feels up a notch which we of course all know are needed to help power Santa’s Claus-o-meter. With a look into what’s really going on in the North Pole, long lost reunions, questionable sugar-based recipes, incredible adventures and all the festive outfits you can shake a candy cane at, we’d be real cotton head ninny muggins’ to leave Elf off our top Christmas movie list.

The Holiday (2006)

Forget rom com being our favourite movie genre Joanie Gals, Christmas romances are what really have our heart! When the love lives of two women a world apart go wrong, they decide to swap lives for the holidays. What ensues is nothing short of heart-warming hilarity that will not only give you the warm and fuzzies but also make you wish that was how you’d dealt with every heartbreak you’d ever felt. Turn those twinkling tree lights down low and grab the eggnog because things are about get real wholesome.

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

If you’re not one for typical Christmas films but don’t want to feel left out this festive season, then The Nightmare Before Christmas is exactly what you need! In a town where every day is Halloween, it’s The Pumpkin King that rules supreme, but he soon realises that even the most spooktacular of us need a little Christmas magic in our lives. With a catchy soundtrack that leaves us wishing we could live like Jack and Sally, Tim Burton’s perfectly spooky take on a Christmas movie is guaranteed to spark a little Christmas spirit.

Jingle All The Way (1996)

It’s turbo time Joanie Gals! If you were looking for the perfect motivation to get your Christmas shopping done early and not leave it until last minute, then this Christmas film is most definitely your motivation! Arnold Schwarzenegger as Howard Langston is a lesson to us all in not forgetting to get the one gift we promised to get before it’s sold out. With everything he goes through to try and get his son the action figure he’s dreamt of, this Christmas movie will have you speeding through your gift list in turbo time!

Die Hard (1988)

Looking to get controversial with your Christmas film choice this year? Then Die Hard is definitely the movie for you! It’s hard to tell whether I love actually watching Die Hard every Christmas or whether I just love the heated debates with those who (wrongly) claim it isn’t a Christmas movie. Kick off your shoes Joanie Gals and join the party with John McClane as he takes us on an action-packed Christmas adventure full of undisputedly perfect one liners, thrilling romantic reunions and the downfall of one of the best villains to grace the big screen.

It’s hard to reign myself in when choosing just 10 Christmas films but at the very least these should get those festive feelings twinkling and have you rocking around the Christmas tree in no time!

Happy Holidays Joanie Gals! May the Queen of Christmas Mariah Carey bless your December with mince pies, beautifully wrapped gifts and an extra serving of pigs in blankets.
