We're thrilled to announce our latest fundraising collaboration with Salford Lads & Girls Club, a community hub in Greater Manchester dedicated to offering inclusive youth programmes for children and young people aged between 6 and 19.
We're donating the profits from the sale of every Joyce Jumper to Salford Lads Club to aid them in their mission to brighten young lives and create good citizens!
The money we raise will go directly towards youth, culture, and heritage programmes, from open-access youth sessions and girls’ football to music and heritage engagement work, all of which are at the heart of the club’s mission to brighten young lives and make good citizens.

Salford Lads' Club was established in 1903 as a purpose-built recreational club for boys, located on the corner of St. Ignatius Walk and Coronation Street in Salford. While the iconic signage remains, the club is committed to inclusivity and today welcomes people of all genders. Salford Lads & Girls Club has supported thousands of young people since its inception, organising activities, cultural and creative exhibitions, offering facilities for music, sport, art, or simply as a safe space for young people to grow.
The building gained listed status in 2003, and its tiled interior remains virtually unchanged, with original fittings including a boxing ring, snooker rooms, and a gym with a viewing balcony. The building is thought to be the most complete example of this rare form of social provision to survive in England by English Heritage, and it came third in a nationwide hunt to find the most iconic buildings in the country. The club also welcomes global visitors for tours on dedicated open days, with merchandise available to purchase to help it remain open.
The club is a proud part of Salford’s past, present and, now, future, following an appeal to save the club from closure in 2024. Over £270,000 was raised for a new roof and to preserve the building's heritage, and the Club’s financial future was secured. The Club’s next move is to set up a legacy fund that will enable it to continue supporting the community in one of the most financially challenged neighbourhoods in the UK.
The Club may carry the name of the lads, but its story has always belonged to women too. This collaboration with Joanie celebrates our heritage, our community, and the strong women who continue to shape the Club from those who supported it in the past to the girls and young women who are part of its future. A huge thank you to the dedicated team at Joanie for bringing this partnership to life.

Salford Lads Club gained international recognition in 1986, when local band The Smiths posed outside for the sleeve of their album, The Queen Is Dead, which features Mancunian anthems including Cemetery Gates, Bigmouth Strikes Again, and The Boy with the Thorn in His Side. The club’s distinctive exterior also features in the video for indie disco classic, There Is a Light that Never Goes Out.
The image of Morrissey, Marr, Rourke and Joyce standing below the famous green arch on the Edwardian red brick building shot by Stephen Wright now hangs proudly in the National Portrait Gallery. To this day, thousands of Smiths’ fans from all over the world still make a cultural pilgrimage to the club to have their picture taken in the same spot. Recent visitors came from as far afield as Santiago in Chile, Reykjavik in Iceland, and Busan in South Korea.
Named after our favourite Smiths drummer, Mike Joyce, the Joyce Jumper is made from a comfy and cosy knit with LENZING™ ECOVERO™ viscose fibres and features a classic fit with a crew neckline, long sleeves, vintage striped rib detailing on the cuffs and hem. The cosy jumper also features the iconic cream graphic ‘Salford Lads Club’ sign reimagined as an intarsia slogan on a classic bottle green background.
I’ve spent the last ten years living in the shadows of the glorious Salford Lads Club. I see the work they do in MY community, I’ve been to both weddings and wakes at this lasting monument to the industrial revolution. It’s a beautiful, awe-inspiring building that reminds us of a time when things were just done BETTER. When the call went out for help for Salford Lads & Girls Club, I knew I wanted us to try to help. Retro merch is my thing, I LOVE The Smiths, and this felt like such a cool thing to do. I hope we’ve done justice to the Club’s iconic logo, reimagined in responsible knitwear form. I’ll be forever swinging my gladioli in support of this cultural landmark.
