If you’re not sure what goblincore is, fear not! We’ve put together everything you need to get to know this style, embrace it, and adopt it for spooky season and beyond…
For many of us, cottagecore is a go-to aesthetic for spring and summer. We love the delicate florals, countryside vibes, and dainty softness that characterises the style, but now that the seasons are changing, how can we adapt it for the colder, darker months ahead?
Enter - goblincore! In true spooky season fashion, it's time to embrace the darker side of life and embrace the rough and ready sibling of cottagecore that isn’t afraid to get their hands dirty!
What Is Goblincore?
Where cottagecore embraces the whimsical, romantic and idealistic side of country life with dainty florals, flowy cotton dresses and brighter earth tones, goblincore is darker and grungier. Think wild mushrooms growing in a dark and dank forest, nature’s beautiful imperfections, getting muddy following a curious frog, and those gloomier hues that characterise autumn and winter.
At its heart, goblincore leans into the more realistic side of country life and encourages you to stop and appreciate the slow snail passing by, the ribbiting of the frog that’s trying to make conversation, the mud that you’ve splashed all over your clothes - embracing nature at its most natural!
How to Wear Goblincore
If you’re not quite feeling running through the forest barefoot after a downpour, making friends with the local pond inhabitants, or going foraging for wild mushrooms, that’s totally fine! There are other ways to fully embrace the goblincore aesthetic. But, if you do enjoy doing all those things, then this is really your time to shine...
For ultimate goblincore inspiration, there’s a whole host of people who perfectly channel the aesthetic at different levels. At one end we have Taylor Swift in her Folklore era, living in a cabin, playing a piano covered in moss, performing mystical midnight rituals in the woods all whilst showcasing a wardrobe that goblincore dreams are made of.
At the other end of the spectrum, we have the likes of Liv Tyler in Lord of The Rings and David Bowie alongside Sarah Connelly in Labyrinth, serving looks from the more mystical side of the aesthetic. If you prefer to take your look more casual and everyday, though, Bella Swan in Twilight is your go-to gal for inspiration, with her rough and ready wardrobe that perfectly encapsulates the colour palette associated with this style.
If you’re still not sure your wardrobe has what it takes to say goodbye to hot girl summer and hello to goblincore winter, then here’s a little inspiration from the Joanie wardrobe to get you going!
