GUYS & DOLLS BEHIND THE SCENES

For anyone who might not know, can you tell us a bit about Guys & Dolls and the characters you play?

Guys & Dolls is a fabulous story about love, commitment, and the importance and value of women in the 1950s. It's a story about how men back then made decisions based on their heads versus their hearts, and, in short, most of the choices made were for the benefit of women. I am part of the female ensemble and also cover Good Time Charlie Bernstein and General Cartwright

What’s your favourite musical number to perform in Guys & Dolls?

I love to perform 'Take Back Your Mink' and 'Havana!'

Guys & Dolls first premiered on Broadway in the 1950s – we’re all about looking to the past for inspiration at Joanie, do you have a favourite decade or vintage era for fashion?

For me, it has to be the '70s or late '80s/early '90s fashion. Women were allowed to be colourful, daring, and flamboyant in their choices, and I love that.

If you could travel back to any place or moment in time, where and when would it be?

About two years ago, when I went back to my hometown of Dominica in the Caribbean. I hadn’t been since I was nine years old, and I went back in my late twenties. It was glorious.

How important is costume as an actor when you’re performing on stage, and what do you like most about your costume(s) for Guys & Dolls?

Costume is so important in theatre, as it takes you back in time to where it really happened! It highlights the class of the character, the age of the character, and the style of the time. Costume is incredibly important.

If you could steal the wardrobe of one character from any stage show or musical, who’s would it be?

Every character dresses so well, but Goodtime Charlie in Guys & Dolls dresses the best for sure! The masculine/feminine edge is definitely my favourite.
