Swimwear styles that don’t cost the earth! We’re partnering with Ocean Co. to prevent plastic waste from reaching the ocean, helping them in their mission to collect 7 billion ocean-bound plastic bottles by the end of 2025.

We all love a relaxing day at the beach, but did you know that by 2050, the plastic in the ocean is expected to outweigh the fish? The ocean is our playground, and it’s our responsibility to protect it.

That’s why we’re working with Ocean Co. on our swimwear line. For every swimwear style we sell, we’ve pledged to collect 1KG of ocean-bound plastic - that’s equivalent to stopping 100 plastic bottles from reaching the ocean!

You can see how many kilograms of plastic we’ve collected so far here on our impact dashboard.

What Is Ocean Co.?

Ocean Co. is a technology platform that connects organisations to science-based impact projects in the global south.

They are seeking to build a community of individuals and organisations tackling the ocean-pollution crisis and contributing to ocean health. They work with communities in some of the most impoverished areas to collect plastic before it reaches the ocean.

Since starting out, they’ve collected over 8 million kilograms of ocean-bound plastic, providing much-needed support for more than 8700 coastal communities.

Why Are We Partnering With Them?

Ocean Co. believes that everyone should have the right to an environment free from plastic pollution. To make this happen, they are working to prevent plastic from entering the ocean in the first place by improving waste management infrastructure

Here at Joanie, we are committed to becoming more sustainable wherever we can, and through our partnership with Ocean Co., we’re helping to prevent plastic from reaching the ocean while supporting the livelihoods of some of the most impoverished communities in coastal regions around the world where plastic pollution is worst.

How Do Ocean Co. Prevent Plastic From Reaching The Ocean?

Ocean Co.’s primary focus is ocean-bound plastic waste: materials that have not been landfilled and are prone to enter waterways, collected within 50 kilometres of coastal areas.

They collect almost every kind of plastic and ensure that it’s put back in a circular loop. High-value plastics are recycled, low-value plastics are up-cycled, and hard-to-recycle plastics are co-processed.

Plastic is collected by locals from some of the worst affected coastal communities, including places in the Philippines, Brazil, Egypt, Ghana, India, and Indonesia, who then exchange the plastic for money or receive digital credit to swap for tuition, tech goods, healthcare, and micro-finance.

Thanks to the grassroots organisations that Ocean Co. work with in coastal communities, they are able to ensure plastic pollution is collected in the places where it’s worst. They then ensure it’s recovered as efficiently and socially beneficially as possible.
