This week on the blog, we're dissecting one of our favourite trends for transitional dressing: the 'frazzled English woman' aesthetic! Read on to learn more about this 2000s romcom-core style and how you can incorporate it into your autumnal wardrobe...

What is the Frazzled English Woman aesthetic?

The frazzled English woman aesthetic first emerged on Pinterest and TikTok a couple of years ago, and it's something that seems to resurface every autumn because of the emphasis on layering, knitwear, and 2000s accessories. Think: Bridget Jones, Juliet in Love Actually, Iris in The Holiday, Caitlin and Vera in The Edge Of Love, and Andy in The Devil Wears Prada.

Strictly speaking, not all of these characters are English, but what unites their aesthetic is a rushed, undone, yet somehow put-together layered style that seems to define quirky romcom leads of the early to mid-2000s. They don't plan their outfits in advance or agonise over getting their looks to match perfectly - they mix prints, throw on a cardigan, and head out the door.

Comfortable, practical, perfectly imperfect, and most of all - fun!

How to dress like a frazzled English woman

In the famous TikTok audio, the instructions for dressing like a frazzled English woman are as follows:

  1. Start with a pair of tights. They can be black, brown, ripped, whatever - as long as you can't see your legs.
  2. Now layer a maxi or mini skirt - preferably patterned or pleated.
  3. Next grab a collared shirt - bonus points if it's wrinkly or un-ironed! That's fine, because...
  4. We're going to add a jumper! If it's not colourful, then make it chunky. If it's not chunky, then at least make sure it's knitted.
  5. Now grab a pair of knee-high boots (perfect for stumbling through the rain and snow).
  6. Add on the final layers - including a blazer that will give off a scholarly illusion, even though really we're just doing anything to avoid responsibility.
  7. Throw on your thinnest knitted scarf, and finally - a claw clip! Don't bother doing your hair, just put it up (or, at least, most of it...).

In other words - layer as many different prints and textures as you have in your wardrobe, pair with Y2K-style accessories (baker boy hats, colourful tights, skinny knitted scarves), and don't do your hair. It's unpolished, nostalgic, and perfect for romanticising the transition from summer into autumn and beyond!

The Fall Into Love

Our latest campaign is all about embracing this outdoorsy, layered look for those in between trans-seasonal days when the weather can't make up it's mind. Textured knitwear, vintage tea dress silhouettes, clashing prints and cosy corduroy make this collection perfect for transitional style.

Looking for some frazzled English woman style inspiration? Here are some of our favourite Joanie pieces from our The Fall Into Love collection!

Tea Dresses

Tea dresses are a staple for dressing like you're the quirky romantic lead in a romcom - mini or midi, it doesn't matter. Layer Colleen or Nova with a pair of sheer tights and some sensible boots and head out!

Floral Prints

Florals are one of our favourite prints because they work for any season, including those awkward transitional weeks between late summer and early autumn. Floral midi dresses like Constance and Albertine are ideal throw-on-and-go pieces for achieving the frazzled English woman aesthetic!

Layered Cardigans

Nothing says frazzled English woman quite like a haphazardly thrown-on cardigan! Channel Bridget in Constance and Quincy, or opt for a more muted combination of Jojo and Clarence.

Knitted Jumpers

You can never go wrong with a cosy textured knit, and Otis really is one of our favourites. This staple chunky cable knit looks great thrown over a midi dress, tied around your shoulders, or layered underneath a denim jacket for extra cosiness.
