On Thursday 20th June, we embarked on our first ever Joanie Team volunteering day with Manchester Urban Diggers, AKA MUD!
Read more: Our First Joanie Team Volunteering DayHere at Joanie, we believe in giving back to our community and making a positive impact beyond our business. For our first volunteering day, we decided to work with MUD, a not-for-profit social enterprise based in Platt Fields Market Garden in Fallowfield, Manchester.
MUD’s nature-friendly community market garden was established in 2017 and is run by dedicated staff and volunteers. They design, build, and manage community gardens and food-growing projects, working to help find solutions to problems with our local food systems by growing fruit, vegetables, and herbs for the local community.
Manchester Urban Diggers (MUD)
MUD is a non-profit social enterprise, and any money they make goes towards developing their projects, providing free services and events for the community, and creating employment opportunities for their volunteers.
The MUD Objectives:
a. Grow and sell fresh, local, seasonal produce using natural farming methods to the local community and businesses at fair prices.
b. Host therapeutic gardening sessions for the community to improve their physical and mental well-being.
c. Activities including consulting on, creating & maintaining new community gardens for the benefit of local residents and community groups.
d. Develop spaces for and host regular volunteer sessions and events for diverse groups and cultures to promote community cohesion.
e. Promote sustainable local food production and a healthy lifestyle.
Joanie Team Volunteering: Our Day At Platt Fields Market Garden
On 20th July, we came together to help out in the gardens! After a tour of the plot, we got stuck in with digging, planting, harvesting, watering, and everything else you might expect when gardening.
We enjoyed the sunshine, tucked into a delicious lunch from the MUD Kitchen, and finished the day with a 45-minute Yoga session! It was a great way to strengthen bonds within our team while supporting a community project based in our local area.
If gardening isn't your thing, there’s still plenty you can help with at MUD! There are a whole host of volunteer roles to fill, from illustration and graphic design to administration, workshop delivery, event planning, stewarding, and cooking.
We had a fantastic day working with the team at MUD, and we could not recommend it more!
