We’re Jess and Lauren, the best friends behind @bookreccos, the Instagram account and podcast where we provide reading recommendations (or reccos!), and we’ve teamed up with Joanie to keep you all well-read and well-dressed with this month's New Year reading recco!

January is for new beginnings and goal setting, so it’s a time when we love to read non-fiction - and We Need To Talk About Money by Otegha Uwagba is a fantastic book to kick off the year with!

As far as New Year reading recommendations go, it doesn't get much more fitting than We Need To Talk About Money. Uwagba speaks frankly and openly about money and the challenges that come with not having enough of it while simultaneously exploring class, race, and gender by considering her own life as a child of immigrant parents who attended a prestigious private school on a scholarship.

This work is as personal as it is political, with Uwagba reflecting on her time at Oxford, starting a graduate job in 2008 at the height of a global recession, toxic workplace culture, freelancing, negotiating pay raises, and even buying a home in London without parental help.

A combination of an extended memoir combined with personal essays, this book is thought-provoking, confronting, and a perfect choice for anybody who wants to start their New Year reading off on a high!

This is a book about toxic workplaces and misogynist men, about getting payrises and getting evicted. About class and privilege and racism and beauty. About shame and pride, compulsion and fear.

In unpicking the shroud of secrecy surrounding money - who has it, how they got it, and how it shapes our lives - this boldly honest account of one woman's journey upturns countless social conventions, and uncovers some startling truths about our complex relationships with money in the process.

It’s eye opening and empowering and we just couldn’t get enough of it. To hear us discuss this book further, tune into our podcast.
