As part of our commitment to being more sustainable, we’ve got a spring update to share with you on how our sustainability journey is going and the progress we’ve made so far this year!

As many of our Joanie Gals will know, we’re embarking on a sustainability journey as a brand. As part of this commitment, we hired an expert Sourcing & Sustainability Consultant to guide us along the way. We introduced Julia Redman in a previous post (an interesting read!) and we’re proud of the steps we’ve made towards being more sustainable as a brand since Julia joined the team.

As the end of total lockdown approaches and we emerge from the cocoons which our homes have become, it feels as if there is a new sense of optimism in the air! You might find yourself feeling a sense of relief, at the end of home schooling, or maybe the thought of getting back out into the wider world is worrying.

Whatever it is that you’re feeling, give yourself a break! We have been through a year like no other, and made it to the other side, maybe with heavy hearts, feeling the loss of a loved one, or the lasting effects of illness. Now is the time to look towards a brighter future and we hope you’ll join us on our Joanie journey as we endeavour to chase that rainbow!

Sustainability: What have Joanie been up to this year?

We Joanie gals have been busy keeping up with the pandemic-driven requirement for online fashion, but our focus has been firmly on making sure that we do this in an ethical and sustainable way. We subscribe to a process of slow fashion, in limited production runs, paid for at a fair price, which ensures the ethical treatment of the workers in our supply chain and reduces the chances of our product ending up in landfill.

We’ve been working closely with our suppliers to ensure that our quality, uniquely styled clothing will last and become a long-term favourite in your wardrobes.

We have increased our use of sustainable, recycled and organic fabrics to 30% of styles currently, to give you the confidence that you are buying clothing which is not going to damage the planet. The aim is to raise this to 50% of styles by the end of the year.

You’ll notice that we’ve added new ‘sustainable’ green labels to products so that you can easily identify these when browsing the website. You can also find all of our sustainable pieces in our handy ‘Wear & Care’ Edit.

All of our signature pink mailing bags are made from Green™ PE, a revolutionary material that is derived from sugarcane - making it a much more sustainable option than regular plastics. Green™ PE is CO2 negative, renewable, recyclable and sustainable!

We’re proud to announce reGAIN as our recycling partner! We hope that you love and re-wear your Joanie pieces as much as possible but if the time has come to part ways, you can use reGAIN's service to donate your unwanted clothes and even get an exclusive discount code to use on your next Joanie order! Now that charity shops have reopened across the UK, you can use the regain app to locate your nearest free drop off point.

We’ve also teamed up with Ecologi to offset all of our business and personal travel, by growing our own company forest, and are now considered a ‘climate positive workforce’. You can see our Ecologi profile, here.
