Dress(es) for JOY! To celebrate the launch of our highly anticipated Zeena X Joanie Edit, we sat down with the queen of dopamine fashion herself, Zeena Shah (AKA @heartzeena), to talk about her top tips for mood-boosting style.
Hi Zeena! Tell us a little bit about the Zeena X Joanie Edit - how would you describe the collection and what drew you to these styles in particular?
I am so excited to be collaborating with Joanie to share my love of colour, print and dressing for JOY! There’s something for everyone in the collection. I wanted to curate an edit of really versatile styles as well as all of my favourites, and I want you to be able to wear these dresses over and over again, styling them up or down for different occasions. It’s my idea of print heaven, and I can’t wait to see everyone wearing it!
You’re well known for your eclectic wardrobe and love of dopamine dressing - why do you think mood-boosting style is so important?
Life is too short not to live in colour! It’s the little things in life that can really make the biggest difference to our mood and well-being. Colour is a powerful tool, and it can have a huge impact on your mood. Just wearing a little pop of colour can boost your mood - isn’t that amazing?! What I also love is that not only do you get a little 'colour high,' but those around you do, too. Summer is the season for colour and pattern, so it’s the perfect time to notice how getting dressed more joyfully makes a difference in your everyday life.
What are your top styling tips? Are there any outfit formulas you always find yourself returning to?
I’m a big fan of the high-low pairing something more luxury with something simple to add interest to your outfit. I love doing this with accessories, shoes and jewellery.
I love layering - it’s really underrated, in my opinion - and is such an easy way to elevate an outfit and make it look and feel different in an instant. Whether it’s popping a shirt or tee underneath a slip dress, tying a cardigan around my neck or layering my necklaces, you really can have a lot of fun with it.
Opposites attract when it comes to colour! I love wearing colour and print clashing, and as long as you’re working with the colour wheel, your colour pairings will always look fabulous. I love going tonal and choosing shades of the same colour tone, or if I'm feeling bold, I go for two contrasting shades that are opposite to each other on the colour wheel. Have fun, and remember: getting dressed shouldn’t feel like a chore - it’s a reflection of your personality!
You've been quoted as saying that you firmly believe that ‘pink is a neutral’ - we couldn’t agree more! Do you have any other potentially controversial dopamine fashion opinions?
It really is! I love pink, and there are so many brilliant shades that work on all skin tones and are a brilliant alternative to black and white. Trust me.
I also believe that colour is for everyone and that adults should be allowed to play and embrace colourful clothing without feeling like it’s just for kids. We need to allow ourselves to celebrate our inner child and dress for who we are (and for JOY!) much more!
As a stylist, where do you look for creative inspiration?
I find my inspiration everywhere, from the colours I see in nature, art, and history (I love looking through old magazines) to stylish East Londoners I see walking past me or online. I also love Pinterest for saving all my favourite looks to recreate, and I'm always hitting save on Instagram, which is filled with stylish fashion girlies.

Finally, if you could raid the wardrobe of anyone in the world - alive or dead - who would it be and why?
Oooh - this is a tough one! Can I have two? It would have to be Carrie Bradshaw or Iris Apfel: both are such fashion icons and have the most incredible wardrobes that really reflect their personalities. I know they’d have some super special treasures they’ve collected over the years, too.
