We’ve thought long and hard about the design, make, and longevity of our shoes, and we’ve tried to inject the same Joanie DNA that we put into our dresses into them - we wanted to make high-quality shoes that will last the test of time, with the idea of ‘future vintage’ always at the forefront of our minds.

With the help of industry experts with over 40 years combined experience designing and creating shoes, we’ve taken our time to research, develop, and carefully fit our footwear. We took our shoes to pieces, reviewing their fabrication and every process we use and to ensure the most sustainable solution was being used at every single stage of their construction.

From the Leather Working Group gold certified leather we use to the eco-friendly jute insole board that we sourced locally to our suppliers in India, Joanie Shoes are designed to be as practical, fun, and sustainable as possible. We’ve done wearer trials on all shapes and sizes to ensure the fit of our shoes is as accurate (and comfortable!) as possible. We even worked with last makers in the UK to carefully craft and shape the fundamental components of our shoes!

Leather Working Group

The Leather Working Group (LWG) is an organisation that measures the environmental and social impact of leather production, awarding certifications to suppliers that meet the highest standards of sustainability. At Joanie, we exclusively use LWG gold certified leathers and suedes, which means that the tanneries and suppliers that produce our leather meet the highest level of LWG certification. All the leather and suede we use is created as a by-product of the food industry and is completely traceable back to the tannery.

Jute Insole Board

We opted to use jute sourced locally to our suppliers in India for the insole boards in our shoes. The natural jute we used is grown without the use of harmful chemicals, making it an eco-friendly, sustainable option. Jute is known for its durability and strength, which makes it an ideal material for use in footwear.

Chrome-Free leather

Chrome free leather is processed without the use of chromium salts, which are commonly employed in traditional leather tanning methods. Choosing chrome-free leather for footwear reduces the environmental impact of leather production, meaning less pollution, cleaner waste streams, and improved biodegradability.

Call me old fashioned, but what a person wears on their feet tells me A LOT! As a committed ‘shoegal,’ I’ve often been known to prioritise form over function, but as the years have ticked by, I’ve grown to understand that comfort is key, and shoes that combine both are hard to come by.

Why shoes, you say? We ask our Joanie Gals each year what they want to see from us next, and the answer has always been, unanimously, SHOES!” A healthy dose of nostalgia with vintage-inspired shapes and details, a splash of colour on the inner to cheer up an otherwise sensible shade, a squishy comfort cushioning insole to allow you to walk all day (or dance all night…), all in leather that is sustainably sourced and built to last.

‘She got stars on the soles of her shoes’ - we couldn't quite stretch to diamonds, but our grippy non-slip soles will leave a trail of stars on the pavement behind you like a walk of fame; a celestial footprint that adds a little spring to your step.
