We're teaming up with Bio-D, a sustainable cleaning brand and fellow B Corp, to give you some top tips on how to care for your clothes more sustainably!
Here at Joanie, we make sure that sustainability and ethics are at the heart of every single decision we make, from the materials we use to the suppliers we work with. We want to do everything we can to limit the overall footprint of our garments - and that goes for after they arrive with you, too!
That’s why we’re teaming up with green cleaning product brand Bio-D to provide some helpful tips on how to care for your clothing more sustainably.
Bio-D are a Certified B Corporation that has created a range of 100% vegan, naturally derived, environmentally friendly laundry products. Their collection provides powerful cleaning power without compromising the planet.
41% of our current collection is made from cotton. Cotton is a natural fibre that is farmed, spun into yarn and then knitted or woven into soft, strong fabrics. It's breathable, absorbent and washable - cord, denim, jersey, twill, and velvet are some of our favourites!
When washing cotton styles - like our Priya Leopard Print Puff Sleeve Midi Dress and Mork Vintage Floral Print Short Sleeve Boilersuit - Bio-D suggests washing similar coloured items on a gentle cycle at a maximum of 30 degrees to help maintain their shape. After washing, make sure your garments are stored with some breathing room.
Viscose is a material created primarily from wood pulp. 99% of our viscose products are made from sustainably sourced, certified fabrics like Lenzing EcoVero. When caring for viscose styles - like our Richy Geometric Floral Print Soft Tailored Blazer and Andi Book Print Shirt Dress - Bio-D recommends washing on a gentle cycle at a maximum of 30 degrees to avoid shrinkage.
16% of the Joanie collection is made from other synthetic fibres such as recycled polyamide and recycled polyester. For styles made from these types of fabrics - like our Lady Garden X Joanie Lollie Charity Pyjamas and Tanya Round Neck Cardigan Stitch Tank Top - a cold, gentle machine cycle works particularly well. Try using Bio-D’s Washing Powder!
Washing uses gallons of precious water and it can break down the fibres in your garments. Avoid long washing cycles and opt for laundry products that work just as well on shorter wash settings.
Another way to save water is by using Bio-D’s Concentrated Laundry Liquid and Extra Concentrated Fabric Conditioner. Because it’s extra concentrated, you can use less product per wash, and less water is used during production.
Did you know that the temperature on the care label is actually the maximum washing temperature, not the recommended? Washing your clothes on a gentle cycle at 30 degrees reduces both microfibre releases and CO2 emissions. Bio-D’s laundry range is designed to work well at low temperatures without compromising on cleaning power!
It is perfectly fine to add your laundry liquid into the washing machine drawer as usual, but adding your chosen product directly to the drum can also be very effective! This method means the liquid dissolves properly as the water fills up from the bottom, leaving space in the drum for circulation and agitation.
Avoiding overfilling your washing machine - this will helps your clothes crease less during the cycle!
If you need to brighten your whites, opt for an eco-friendly, non-chlorine alternative to traditional bleach. Bio-D’s Laundry Bleach, created from naturally derived ingredients, is an antibacterial and sanitising in-wash whitener that keeps whites light and colour bright (it’s also Allergy UK registered).
When a pesky stain strikes, use Bio-D’s Laundry and Stain Remover Bar. This unique handmade bar has big stain-removing power without the use of harsh or toxic bleach components. It's also zero-waste, with 100% recyclable cardboard packaging.
